I am planning to improve my Dental Hygiene Practice By..."Learning about the 2014 Guidelines for Premedication Use"
Activies
- 1.
- Stop premedicating! ADA review examines treatment of patients with prosthetic joints
- By JoAnn R. Gurenlian, RDH, MS, PhD
- RDH Magazine
- Taken from Dentistry IQ - http://www.dentistryiq.com/articles/2015/01/stop-premedicating.html
- 2.
- Antibiotic Prophylaxis Recommendations
- CDHO Web Site PDF Document
- Taken from CDHO - http://www.cdho.org/reference/english/antibioticprophylaxis.pdf#zoom=75
- 3.
- Clients with Cardiac Pacemakers
- CDHO Web Site PDF Document
- Taken from CDHO - http://www.cdho.org/reference/english/pacemaker.pdf#zoom=75
Information/Skills Gained:
- I have learned the importance of why premedication is so important and am confident I can explain this to clients who may have doubt
- If bacteria finds its way around an artificial joint for example, it will be very hard for the body to fight that infection with white blood cells. This could lead to infection and the joint will need to be replaced
- I now have a print out for my room for who 'may' need antibiotics before a cleaning and who 'may not'
- I am aware that I should ALWAYS consult with the dentist before treatment and a physician and/or surgeon may need to be called to clarify
- I am aware that now antibiotics can be taken 30-60 minutes BEFORE an appointment but can also be taken during or after the appointment due to recent guidelines
How I made changes in my practice and how my learning will make things better for my clients:
- Sometimes clients do have questions why they need antibiotics before a cleaning and I can clearly explain to them now, and show examples of recent literature printed in case they want further clarification
- I am of more value to my boss, the Dentist, because I will have a good idea of who or who does not need antibiotics and am aware I still need to check with them before proceeding
- I am aware that antibiotics can be given at the time of the appointment IF the client "forgot", this will save time in re-booking that client for another day and having them take time out of their schedule to come back

Hello fellow RDH's! This is not portfolio related but..
I have been getting MASS amounts of emails lately (which is awesomeness about how RDH's can start working online so....
In a nutshell, what I do is I am first and foremost an RDH and I LOVE our profession. But, I wasn’t getting enough hours so I was proactive and went out to start looking for jobs I could do online working for other businesses. I took some courses, hired a business coach and finally was able to secure part time work while working from home.
It is now more like full-time, I work for other dental offices designing web sites and updating their pages, I send out mass email newsletters for them, call to book and confirm appointments from home, tutor and am a business coach now myself, etc.
I work at a dental office still and I have helped other RDH’s start a part-time business opportunity like I did and its quite easy. I figured since I could do it and am helping other RDH's who work at my office
I wanted to help RDH all over the world.
Does this sound like something you may want to do? All I want to do is help and I put a free eBook together if you are interested you can go to :http://www.officeelle.com/free.html
