Why Dental Crowns May Be a Better Option Than a Filling

Many patients wonder whether a dental filling is enough to restore a damaged tooth or if a crown would be a better option. While fillings are effective for small cavities and minor damage, crowns provide a more durable and long-lasting solution, especially for teeth with extensive decay or structural issues. Here’s why crowns may be the better choice for certain situations.
1. Crowns Provide Greater Protection
Fillings restore only a portion of a damaged tooth, leaving the remaining structure vulnerable to fractures. Crowns, on the other hand, completely encase the tooth, providing superior strength and protection against further damage. If your filling is more than two surfaces, a crown may be your better option
2. Longer Lifespan and Durability
While fillings can last several years, they may wear down or break over time. Crowns, made from strong materials like porcelain or metal, typically last much longer and offer greater durability for daily biting and chewing. You can even get a full gold crown if you wanted :)
3. Ideal for Large Cavities or Weak Teeth
If a cavity is too large, a filling may not be sufficient to support the tooth’s structure. In such cases, a crown helps reinforce and stabilize the tooth, reducing the risk of fractures or additional decay. You could try to 'repair' a large filling but it can easily chip and crack. With a crown, you won't have that problem
4. Better Aesthetics
Tooth-colored crowns blend seamlessly with natural teeth, offering a more aesthetically pleasing result compared to fillings, which can sometimes appear noticeable, especially on larger surfaces. Such as porcelain or porcelain fused to metal to add strength but still look like a natural tooth color.
5. Prevention of Further Dental Issues
A properly placed crown helps prevent future dental complications, such as cracks, infections, or the need for a root canal. By fully covering and sealing the tooth, crowns reduce the chances of further decay spreading.
When Should You Choose a Crown Over a Filling?
If a tooth has severe decay or a large existing filling that needs replacement.
If a tooth is cracked or weakened and requires extra support.
If a root canal has been performed, requiring protection for the remaining tooth structure.
