You are accepted into dental hygiene school, yippie! Now what? I can speak from ten years experience that the main stress that comes from school is when you fail something. Either didactic failure or clinical, this is a huge stresser. Nobody finishes dental hygiene school and says "I loved it! I would do it again!". I took the dental hygiene program twice (my first private college went bankrupt and shut down) so I can speak from 'personal' experience that the program isn't easy. But you know what? It's well worth it!
When I was in school, the main thing that stressed me out was 'worrying' about failing a test or exam. When I passed that exam I was relieved and felt 100% better. More then half way into the program I developed some study skills, had a study group and found this was a huge help! Failing an exam is so stressful because this usually means having to pay to take another exam, and if you fail that one you are out of the program. The policies are different for every school of course but once you develop good study habits it will make your program so much easier!
As a new student it is the perfect time to develop such habits! Starting off right will serve you greatly and you can even help other students do the same.
1. Find a study place. Have you ever heard that you should use your bed for sleeping only? This programs your mind to fall asleep easier as soon as you hit the sheets. The same goes for your study place - pick the same spot if you can so it programs your mind for study time.
2. Minimize clutter and distractions. This means no checking Facebook, no mini breaks to browse online and no "doing laundry instead". Allot certain times for studying and stick to that. I used to plan my day per hour and would allow 3 hours of study time at the most. Turning off your phone is also a huge help :).
3. Get enough sleep. Studying all night DOES NOT help...I repeat, it does not help! Waking up at 2am to study for an exam for 8am DOES NOT help. Your body needs to rest and you need your sleep. Your brain can't function on only a few hours of sleep.
4. Study before play. If you keep putting studying off, you will dread it. Think of studying as learning something new and you need to do this to be the best dental hygienist you can be. If you plan to study after school, study first and then reward yourself for a job well done.

In the dental profession we sit all day, and everyday. If we do have to stand for a patient we can feel it right away in our neck, back and shoulders from leaning over for 40 minutes. We prefer to sit and sitting helps us reach proper ergonomics to avoid work place injuries. But, what about all the negative health effects of sitting? Has anyone thought of that?
Studies show that sitting for too long can increase our risk for a number of diseases including diabetes, heart disease and not to mention excessive weight gain. This is due to the simple fact that if we are sitting, we are not being active. If we are not being active, we are not as healthy as we could be. It is said that the human race isn't meant to sit, at least not for the average 5 hours a day that studies suggest.
The computer and internet are part of our regular daily activities, so even for those people who don't sit all day at work they are probably coming home and sitting all night at the computer. Who doesn't want to 'sit after a long day at work'?. Who doesn't want to 'just relax and watch TV on the couch after working all day'? I know I do! After working all day the last thing I want to do is go for a jog or walk around all night.
Standing all day simply isn't possible and in my opinion if we did stand all day we would have OTHER health issues to deal with. But having that said, I think we need to reduce the number of hours spent sitting because it's no doubt harming us.
What I do:
1. I stand at my desk from time to time when at home - I bought a desk that has an upper part to it, where I can easily move my lap top around and stand for a period of time (I'm standing while I write this article). Desk seen here if interested.
2. Studies suggest getting up every half an hour for a quick walk around or take a break. So, every half an hour I DO get up to either get water, stretch or run in place while at home.
3. While working in the dental office I know I can't get up every half an hour (patient appointments are 40 minutes each) but after the appointment I need to clean the tray in the 'sterile bay area' so this is my walking and break.
4. At lunch I walk around after eating my food for at least 30 minutes (if I have a hour lunch that day haha) and if at home I run up and down the stairs 10 times (try it! you will sure feel the burn)
Little steps at a time but with all the studies and research I have been reading about why sitting can be so harmful, I want to make the effort to improve. The little things anyone can do will help! Do you have any tips you would like to share? Comment below :).

Continuous learning is a necessity these days to stay on top of your field. Online learning not only means you can learn a skill relatively quickly but it will be a lot less expensive then if you had to show up everyday in a classroom. Is online learning for everyone? The truth is, online learning is not for everyone. If you don't have basic knowledge of the computer and the internet you will become confused. If you don't have your own internet access at home it could be tough, having to go to a friends house or public place may be a bit of a hassle.
Make sure to honor your commitment when you sign up for an online learning class and complete the course on time. What an easy way to learn something new quick and easily! Forbes magazine described internet education as "one of the biggest emerging trends of the decade".
I have been in the dental field for 10 years now and love what I do. I have always had a 'business mind' so I also consider myself an entrepreneur now that I own my own tutoring business and I am a business coach helping aspiring entrepreneurs start their own online business.
I took a full 2 hours out of my day to attend a seminar, one I haven't heard much about but came across it in my email and thought WHY NOT?! The seminar was called 'Courage to Start Now'. Am I ever glad I attended! The energy of amazing Suzanne Evans was contagious and the rest of the speakers she had with her.
She left behind some amazing points for me to share with you all and some of them I have been talking about before in previous blog posts. It goes to show you that all of us entrepreneurs really do think alike and have the same mind set. We all have amazing creative outlets that we need to express and a routine job sitting in a cubicle isn't for us. Does this sound like you? Guess what, you have an entrepreneur spirit!
The one point that really stuck with me was that entrepreneurs are not all about the money - there is something more important and it ties into our personal connection. This is so true because indeed we want to make money, but our drive and purpose ISN'T to make money, but it is to feed a personal desire we have. Feeding that personal desire ALLOWS us to make money. Let me explain:
That personal issue could be anything from - wanting to send our two kids to college (who has $100,000 extra to do that?!), wanting to stop working 50 hours a week in a cubicle job that we really don't like, we want to stop having that dreaded feeling of 'ugh I hate work', we want our husbands to stop working so hard working two jobs and 80 hour weeks, we bought a house and want to pay off our mortgage faster...etc, whatever it may be! We want to solve a personal issue AND make money along the way helps us do just that
Another point that stuck with me was not to be afraid to ask for help. When starting a business we are not experts YET, we become experts by having a coach teach us how THEY DID IT. We need a coach and a mentor to teach us their ways, teach us their mistakes so we can avoid them, and last but not least be the best entrepreneur we can be! We can't do this alone.
In conclusion here - entrepreneurs need help starting out and then you will become an expert and be AMAZING. Look and determine your personal issue you want to solve and GO! :). I said GO! :).
